The new beauty pageant netflix show is a hilarious take on the real-life controversy. It features interviews with former Miss Americas, whistleblowers and contemporary contestants, shedding light on the ways pageant culture has perpetuated bullying, body-shaming, racism, sexism, and more.
The series follows Patty, a vengeful 17-year-old who uses beauty pageants to exact her revenge. Her story begins after a violent encounter with a homeless man and a summer of a liquid diet leave her slimmer and ready to strike back. Defense attorney-turned-pageant coach Bob sees Patty’s potential and takes her under his wing to get her into the Miss Georgia pageant for payback.
At first, Patty doesn’t think her slimmer figure qualifies her to win, but her newfound confidence gives her the push she needs to step into a pair of heels. Bob teaches her the skills of competing—how to walk on a stage in stilettos, how to strut her stuff for judges, and most importantly, how to win the hearts of the audience.
While Patty struggles to perfect her pageant routine, she develops a crush on the pastel-clad Bob. The plotline goes nowhere for awhile, but there’s something to be said for watching a teenage girl fall madly in love with a guy who was once branded a pedophile.
The second season of the comedy has already been picked up by Netflix. Arden Myrin, who starred in the first season as Regina Sinclair, a trash-talking, ammoral pageant mom with a taste for sex and money, has been upped to series regular.
