Description:
Beauty pageants have been around since the 19th century as a competition focused on judging the physical beauty and talents of young female contestants. Say what you want about how women are being ranked by beauty, but some shows have been around for decades like the Miss America pageant. And it did not take long for the age requirement of some beauty contests to drop down to target young girls as well.
The United States tends to be the craziest when it comes to child beauty pageants. If you ever had a chance to watch “Toddlers and Tiaras,” you probably have a good idea why this reality show is insanely addicting to watch. A child beauty pageant is basically a beauty contest including contestants under 16 years of age. There’re been age divisions broken down to 0-11 Months – yep, there’s even newborns in these beauty competitions!
These child beauty pageants usually range from showing off your talent or participating in interviews to modeling in costumes or swimwear. Each pageant show even has standards on how the girls can look. A natural pageant embraces a young girl’s innocence, while the glitz pageants do the complete opposite.
Glitz pageants seem to be the most controversial in the child beauty pageant universe. Now this type of beauty contest is exaggerated on reality shows like “Toddler and Tiaras.” You will see young girls wearing pounds of makeup and even wearing “flippers” – also known as fake teeth to cover their missing ones. Apart from their facial looks, the girls even wear big hairstyles and custom-made costumes to present on stage.
There’s not much of a surprise on why these shows can get some intense criticism! We can’t help but wonder how much pressure these little girls deal with due to the constant competitions. There are some girls forced to follow gender stereotypes, while other girls probably just want to be a kid. It’s why some people speculate if the parents are to blame on obsessing over their children to win these child pageants.
Is it really worth it? An average cost of these child pageants can range from free to hundreds of dollars – that’s not including the costumes and other necessities needed for the contestant such as accessories or a hotel room. We hope some children actually enjoy participating in these competitions or else there’s a chance they’ll be throwing a tantrum real soon. Even if you never witnessed this kind of beauty contest, get ready for the 10 most disturbing child pageant pictures you have to see.
