Beauty pageant uk 2020
It’s July and in an unassuming grey-brick hotel tucked behind a multistorey car park, the finalists for Miss England are gathering. They are dressed in their evening gowns with artificial silk sashes draped across their shoulders to display which region they represent and identifying numbers strapped around their wrists. It’s a scene not unlike a high-school prom – nervous boyfriends lurk outside the banqueting hall clutching makeup cases, parents wander the hallways eager to catch a glimpse of their daughters.
For these young ladies, the prize is more than a beautiful crown and sequins- it’s a chance to be a role model for the next generation. “I want to help young girls feel good about themselves and show them that there’s more than just their appearance,” says Alina Khan, winner of this year’s title. The 22-year-old from Dorset is a police officer cadet and garment fabrication student, who has raised thousands for charity through Tough Mudder, the Three Peaks Challenge and sponsored skydives.
The winners of the British titles go on to compete in the International finals – with more than half the overall score based on interview. The delegates are expected to promote the competition, attend events and be ambassadors for their country.
There are no entrance fees to the British beauty pageants but delegates can be expected to spend money on their costumes, hair and makeup, travel and accommodation. The judging is done by professional judges who work within the industry. They’re looking for what the finalists do with their time, whether they are a good role model, are happy and confident and will promote the title. Women of all ages, sizes, religions and sexualities are welcome to take part in the competition.
