A video of a fight at a beauty pageant in Sri Lanka has gone viral. The alleged brawl at the Miss Sri Lanka New York pageant occurred on October 21. It was held at the Vanderbilt in South Beach, where there is a large Sri Lankan population. Organizers claimed the event was to raise money for a hospital in the country.
The contestants included some of the country’s top beauties. The event’s organizer, Sujani Fernando, claimed the fight was not directed at the women. However, the video shows several people slamming each other and laying into each other.
Photos of the event have also caused a stir. One photo, which is going viral on social media, shows model Pham Ngoc Phuong Anh wearing an embellished yellow gown. Another photo depicts Pham and her model friend, a Filipino-American named R’Bonney Gabriel, shaking hands and giving each other the “huuuuge” kiss.
Some netizens have criticized the behavior of the party guests. Some broke items while others argued and fist-fights ensued.
There is no evidence that the event was anything more than a fundraising drive for a local hospital. But that doesn’t mean it’s any less controversial. Indeed, the controversy surrounding international pageants has some merit. Many critics argue that the idea of beauty pageants is trivial and irrelevant.
The Miss Universe pageant has a huge audience of six hundred million viewers and the competition has been broadcast to eighty countries. Despite the controversy, the pageant still serves as a symbol of national identity and pride.
